Geelong residents have the chance to channel their inner grace and beauty at a series of dance workshops with The Australian Ballet at Geelong Arts Centre this July.

In the leadup to its return to The Playhouse stage from July 28 to 29, the Australian Ballet is providing a series of community engagement workshops to give locals of all ages the opportunity to get moving under the watchful eyes of world-class ballet dancers and teachers.

From July 4 to 6, in Limelight Studio 4, children aged three to 12 can participate in The Australian Ballet School Holiday Workshop series.

The sessions will encourage young movers to explore the world of dance through warm-ups, dance exercises and chorographical games.

The workshops will focus on The Story of Pomi and Gobba, a contemporary adaption of the Wiradjuri Dreamtime Story “Gobbagumlun and Pomingalarna” and tap into all things costume design, music and storytelling.

No ballet experience is required

In addition to the creative workshops, youngsters will also get free access to The Australian Ballet’s subsequent performances of Pomi and Gobba.

On July 26, local dance teachers can take their turn in learning more about the creative craft of dance during a two-hour classroom-based session.

The session will explore new techniques that aim to put students in the choreographical driving seat and will focus on professional development and innovative thinking.

Geelong Arts Centre head of programming, Penny McCabe said the venue couldn’t wait to be hosting The Australian Ballet before they took centre stage later in July.

“Geelong Arts Centre is thrilled to provide the G21 region with the opportunity to explore ballet excellence with the best in the business, The Australian Ballet.”
