Victorians affected by cancer feeling the financial pinch
Cost of living pressures continue to affect Victorians, as the number of those impacted by cancer who require financial support has risen by more than 50 per cent.
Between January and November last year, Cancer Council Victoria’s cancer nurses fielded more than 12,000 enquiries through the information and support line.
Psychological and emotional support was the number one reason for calling, followed by practical issues, including managing the cost of cancer.
Primary reasons for phoning 13 11 20 included:
Psychological and emotional support – 4,291 enquiries
Practical issues, such as managing the cost of cancer – 2,261 enquiries
Treatment and management of cancer – 1,782 enquiries
General information, such as navigating the health system – 1,506 enquiries, and
Early detection and screening: 675 enquiries.
Cancer Council Victoria’s head of strategy and support Danielle Spence said many experiencing cancer, and their families, have struggled emotionally while navigating the cancer system and dealing with the cost of living pressures.
“In 2024, our emotional counselling referrals increased by 31 per cent, while our financial counselling referrals increased by 52 per cent.
“Some Victorians are finding the cost of cancer and living overwhelming.
“Some people are unable to work due to the side effects of treatment, and they are telling us that, for the first time, they are having to tap into their life savings to make ends meet.”
The Australian charity’s information and support line is available to anyone affected by the disease, providing emotional and practical support.
“13 11 20 is free, confidential and available for anyone affected by cancer who has a question – those diagnosed and their family, friends and carers,” Ms Spence said.
Support through the line is available Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm, where cancer nursers can answer a variety of questions and match callers with volunteers who have gone through a similar experience.
