NEIGHBOURING Corio house blocks would become a 10 double-storey townhouse development under plans before Geelong council.

Developers would knock down two single-storey houses at 3 and 4 Dorset court to make way for the new $1.7-million complex, which planners argue would improve housing diversity for the area.

The 10 units would have a variety of designs and include eight two-bedroom homes, one three-bedroom and one four-bedroom.

The planning submissions draws on the City of Greater Geelong’s Municipal Planning Strategy, which earmarks Corio and Norlane for affordable housing supply due to the region’s industrial and manufacturing history and proximity to Geelong CBD, Avalon Airport and GeelongPort through transport links. G21 also recognises the area as appropriate to target for infill and higher-density housing.

The site’s walking distance to key services including activity centres, schools and recreation facilities was also cited to support more residents to use sustainable transport modes.

Planners stated that their proposal would “comply with the objective of change and growth in the residential areas” of the city and that the multi-unit development would provide greater affordable housing supply for the region.

“It is an appropriate form of infill development for the site based on the existing developments in the immediate and surrounding area,” planning documents stated.

The plans are open for public comment until February 8.
