VICTORIA’S top gymnasts descended on Geelong Arena on April 5 to compete in the 2024 Senior Victorian Championships.

Across three days Gymnastics Victoria welcomed close to 500 athletes from around the state to the event.

The championships are hosted annually across a range of categories including Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline Gymnastics, Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics and more.

2022 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Kate McDonald is hopeful to be heading off to Paris for the 2024 Olympics.

Gymnastics Victoria Chief Executive Alistair Edgar said they have a strong network of member clubs and professional coaches who come together and deliver great experiences.

“The Senior Victorian Championships brings together Victoria’s best gymnasts and the depth of talent on show in this Olympic year was incredible to see,” he said.

To make it to the championships, athletes start the year competing in trials across the state, those who reach the scores are then invited to the Geelong event where they compete for state titles.

From here, athletes have the potential to progress to selection onto the Victorian State Team where they represent Victoria at the Australian Gymnastics Championships and Border Challenge.

Selection and participation on the State Team is necessary to be selected on the Nationals Team to represent Australia.

“With close to 500 gymnasts competing from across the State, our Victorian Championships attract thousands of spectators and visitors who enjoy the gymnastics and bring economic benefits to the region,” Mr Edgar said.

Special Olympic Athletes were also competing at the championships.

“Geelong has been home to the Victorian Championships since 2008 and we have seen significant growth of the sport in the region as a result.”

There are a number of Olympic hopefuls across the state in the Women’s Gymnastics Arena including Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist on beam, Kate McDonald.
