WORKS are under way to upgrade the learning facilities for the senior students at a Geelong specialist school.
In June, construction began at Nelson Park School’s Corio campus, in Illinois Avenue, on a modern and inclusive learning centre – the first stage of a broader master plan for the campus.
The $6 million project, funded by the state government, includes four general purpose classrooms, two specialist areas, an outdoor basketball court, and a separate administration building along with decking and landscaping.

Lara MP Ella George joined Nelson Park School principal Libby Gatgens, school council president Lorraine McKay, and students Ameliah Stevenson and Liam Keating at the campus recently to view the project’s progress.
“This new build is a significant investment in the future of our students at Nelson Park School,” Ms George said.
“It reflects our commitment to providing world-class educational facilities in Geelong’s North and ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.

“I was delighted to speak with school leaders Ameliah and Liam, who are excited for this major redevelopment of their school.”
As the new learning centre comes to fruition, she said, it will serve as an example of accessible education, ensuring every student, regardless of their background or where they live, has access to quality educational opportunities.
The project marks the school’s second major upgrade in recent years, after students at its Bell Park campus last year celebrated the completion of a $10 million modernisation project that delivered a range of new learning facilities and spaces.
