AFL BARWON region general manager Edward Wilson has stepped down and will finish in the role on March 26.

Wilson, who was appointed to the position in June 2022, has accepted a new opportunity as chief executive officer of Motorcycling Victoria.

AFL Barwon lauded his ability to work swiftly and enthusiastically to lead and settle the region following the COVID-interrupted footy and netball seasons.

Chair Michelle Gerdtz acknowledged Wilson’s contributions and leadership.

“Edward has been a dedicated leader who has significantly contributed to the ongoing success of our region,” she said.

“His vision and commitment to community football and netball have left a lasting impact, and we sincerely thank him for his efforts.”

Wilson’s key achievements have included establishing the AFL Barwon Strategy for 2023–2025 and completing the region’s Competition Review, which led to the introduction of a movement mechanism within the senior male football and senior netball competitions to enhance balance and fairness.

AFL Barwon also praised his involvement toward introducing and integrating the Club Development Lead resource and introducing the Group Manager – Operations position to enhance competition management.

Expanding and refreshing the partnership between AFL Barwon and the Geelong Cats as well as launching the Greater Geelong LGA Plan project have also been features of his venture.

The AFL Barwon Commission will now work closely with AFL Victoria to start the process of appointing a new region general manager in the coming weeks.
