THE Geelong Amateur Football Netball Club will have the capacity to host more night football matches and evening training sessions following the installation of LED floodlighting at Queens Park.

The LED lighting has been rolled out at both Stinton and Shaw Ovals at Queens Park and will assist the club with accommodating its rapidly growing player group.

Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan supported the initiative and hoped it would provide greater accessibility opportunities for the club.

“Geelong Amateur Football Netball Club has a long and proud history of football participation in the region and now with 30 teams across men’s, women’s and juniors, we’re delighted to be able to support these players in their training at night in a safe environment.

“I’m so proud that our community is benefitting from this funding, and, given that Geelong Amateur was at the forefront of the development of women’s football in Geelong, the club will now have the support to cater for even more female participation.

“The club’s commitment to expanding its program was evident in the $30,000 it contributed to completing the project.”

Geelong Amateur will have the capacity to host more night games and evening training sessions.

Councillor Ron Nelson also welcomed the LED light upgrades and cited it would allow the Bellarine Football Netball Club to extend both playing and training times.

“Along with catering for the dramatic rise in female participation in the sport, the lighting will assist the club in building its depth throughout the men’s teams,” Cr Nelson said.

“The club is also rich in the number of junior boys and girls, along with almost 250 Auskick participants.

“The prospect of playing matches under lights at night or dusk is also very appealing and these developments will ensure the club is well positioned to go down that path, should the opportunity arise.”
