Appeal for info on missing Cadel statue
THE CITY of Greater Geelong is appealing for information about a public art exhibition stolen from a Newtown bike park.
The “Bike Boy” sculpture is a homage to Australia’s greatest ever road cyclist Cadel Evans and has been missing from The Hill Mountain Bike Park since at least January.
COGG says Bike Boy was removed from near the corner of Shannon Avenue and Newcastle Street with an angle grinder, though the exact date of the theft is unknown.
The bronze statue from renowned sculptor Sue Corbett is about one metre high, one metre long and 40 centimetres wide, with the city hopeful community members can help track down its missing piece of public art.
“Bike Boy is one of our community-owned public art pieces and a beloved feature at The Hill Mountain Bike Park in Newtown,” Mayor Trent Sullivan said.
“The artwork is known to put a smile on the faces of riders at the park and we urgently want to return the sculpture to its home in good condition.”
Local legend Evans was a World Cup-winning mountain bike rider before he became a full-time road racer in a career that netted him Australia’s only ever win in the world’s most prestigious race; the Tour de France.
