AVALON Airport precinct is preparing for vast expansion as major companies establish distribution centres.

Companies including Australia Post, Petstock, and Cotton On, which already employ over 2,000 people, have set up their distribution centres at the Avalon precinct.

In October, Minister for Defence, Richard Marles, opened Australia Post’s newest cutting-edge parcel facility at Avalon.

“This is an exciting day for Geelong because this facility supports more than 100 jobs right here in Avalon. commented Mr. Marles said.

Executive Chairman of Avalon Airport David Fox said potential construction opportunities worth more than $1.5 billion could generate upwards of 5,000 jobs in the coming three years.

“By accommodating further developments, we strengthen the airport’s role as a key contributor to the economy in Geelong, Melbourne, and broader Victoria. At Avalon, the opportunities are limitless, we are just taking off,” he said.

Retail giant Cotton On, situated within the Avalon industrial zone, recently inked a two-year agreement with Australia Post to dispatch eCommerce orders nationwide.

South Korean defence firm Hanwha is setting up a $170 million centre in the precinct.

The Australian Army selected Hanwha Defense Australia earlier this year as its top choice to supply infantry fighting vehicles.

The LAND 400 Phase 3 project contract, valued between $5–$7 billion, promises to significantly boost the regional economy.

Founded in 1952 as Korea Explosives Co., Hanwha grew into a large multi-national conglomerate with a portfolio spanning from AI and aersospace to explosives and lifestyle services.

Last year, The City of Greater Geelong and Changwon City, where Hanwha’s headquarters are located, formalised an agreement promoting mutual trade, education, and culture.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said at the time that he hoped the Memorandum of Understanding will benefit both regions.

“This MOU aligns with the Geelong community’s 30-year vision to be internationally recognised as a ‘clever and creative’ city with a prosperous economy, that supports jobs and education opportunities.”
