THE Women in Community Life Awards will again celebrate the extraordinary contributions and leadership roles of women across the City of Greater Geelong.

This will be the the eighth edition of the annual awards, and more than 20 women are nominated across seven categories for their outstanding achievements in disability rights, women’s health, climate action, education, human rights, innovation for a gender-neutral future and leadership in the community as a First Nations Woman.

The Women in Community Life Awards started in 2016 and have attracted significant interest across the region since their inception.

Nominations are independently assessed by members of the Women in Community Life Advisory Group, City of Greater Geelong staff and category sponsors.

This year’s International Women’s Day event theme is ‘Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future’, and the March 8 event will feature a keynote address by Code Like a Girl co-founder Ally Watson.

Ms Watson is passionate about gender equality in technology and is certain to provide a thought-provoking presentation as the municipality celebrates the efforts and achievements of local women.

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said that acknowledging the contribution of women in the community was a fitting way to mark International Women’s Day.

“I congratulate all women on their nominations and thank them for their outstanding contributions toward making Geelong such a great place to live.

“International Women’s Day and the accompanying awards ceremony enables us to recognise and celebrate local women for their achievements in contributing to a fairer, more equitable community.”

The event will be held on level 2 of Wurriki Nyal, 137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong, on March 8 at 5 pm.

Admission is free but attendees are required to book tickets by heading to geelongiwd2023.eventbrite.com.au
