BARWON Water will fund nine new community-led environmental projects from Birregurra through to the Bellarine.
In the second year of its annual grants program, Barwon Water has distributed almost $33,000 towards programs saving water, improving the environment, helping people to be active and fostering social inclusion.
The recipients included Allanvale Preschool, Birregurra Men’s Shed, Central Baptist Church Clifton Springs, Common Ground Project, Cloverdale Community Centre, Eastern Park Croquet Club, Lions Club of Lara, Rotary Club of Ocean Grove and Swan Bay Environment Association.
The Birregurra Men’s Shed will use its grant to build a community vegetable garden at its entrance, including an arbour, water connection, sprinklers and planter boxes.
Common Ground Project will create a culturally relevant garden education space to support vulnerable youth and women from migrant and CALD backgrounds.
The Lions Club of Lara aim to improve biodiversity, soil health and water conservation by planting native trees and grasses in Lara and Little River.
Barwon Water acting general manager customers, community and strategy Nicole Sexton said responding to the needs of customers and community was one of the ways Barwon Water was contributing positively to the region.
“We’re proud to be able to support initiatives that can create healthier and more connected local communities.
“It is pleasing to see a high number of projects that are focused on making water savings and being sustainable, especially as the region contends with ongoing dry conditions.”
Barwon Water also offers grants to support businesses to improve water efficiency and make permanent savings, and for schools to make positive change to the local environment.
