THERE’S still time for children to celebrate the superheroes in their own neighbourhoods as part of this year’s Bethany Superhero Awards.

The annual awards, run by the not-for-profit community services organisation for Barwon and the south-west, aim to engage and educate primary school aged children about the importance of respectful, caring relationships and how to identify positive role models in their lives.

Primary school aged children can nominate someone they admire – their everyday superhero – for the Bethany Superhero Awards before tomorrow (Friday, May 28).

Their special person could be a family member, friend, teacher, coach, or someone in their community.

Tate Street Primary School pupils have taken up the challenge, and have drawn illustrations of their superheroes. Some of them include:

  • Isobel – Miss Booth, her Prep teacher, who “keeps me safe in school”
  • Toby – Arielle, a friend, who “helps me be brave”
  • Tom – Will, his brother, who “does fun things with me”
  • Riley – His dad, “who is an engineer and gives me lots of hugs”
  • Miranda – Her cousin Rosie, “who gives me piggyback rides”
  • Bianca – Her sister Sophie, “who always helps me with my learning and does my hair in a ponytail”.

Tate Street Primary School prep teacher Alicia Dixon said the children had fun choosing their superheroes.

“They’ve loved doing this activity, it was a good thing to think about; to appreciate the people in their lives,” she said.

Children who nominate their superheroes have the chance to win prizes from businesses including:

  • Tickets to a Geelong Cats game at GMHBA stadium
  • Swim, Sport and Leisure – City of Greater Geelong (passes cover the Leisurelink, Waterworld, Splashdown, and the Kardinia, Lara and Bellarine aquatic centres)
  • Adventure Park
  • Museum of Play and Art
  • Dizzy Toys, Geelong West
  • Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, Warrnambool
  • Sea All Dolphin Swim and Village, Queenscliff
