Choir brings joy of music to a new generation
THE Geelong Youth Choir has announced the return of its “Let’s Make Music!” program designed specifically for preschool-aged children.
The program, which will begin on October 7, aims to foster creativity, cognitive development, and a lifelong love of music in young learners. Developed by experienced early childhood educators and professional music teachers, Let’s Make Music! integrates music theory, movement, and play in a fun, engaging format.
Children will explore rhythm, melody, singing and dancing through interactive activities that enhance their ability to express themselves, in a nurturing and inclusive environment.
“Music is a universal language that has a profound impact on early childhood development,” Let’s Make Music! lead music educator Samantha Robinson said.
“Our program is designed not only to introduce children to the joys of music but also to enhance their sense of belonging and connection.
“Humans are musical beings, and through music we can learn to listen to each other in a meaningful way.”
Adult carers of the children also participate, learning a repertoire of songs and dances that they can share with the children outside of the class.
“It’s lovely to watch families learning music together, and I’m hoping that the adult carers will feel happy to share some of their own musical traditions within the class”, Ms Robinson said.
Instructors are highly qualified educators with extensive experience in early childhood music education.
Classes are available for children aged one to two and three to four, allowing focused and appropriate activities for each developmental level
“We believe music should be part of every child’s life, and we’re excited to provide a space where families can explore music together, and build a community that values the joy of music,” Geelong Youth Choir director of music Phillipa McQuinn said.
The program will be offered on Mondays at the community centre at Belmont Uniting Church on Thomson Street, with limited places available in 2024.
