Christmas time has arrived

GEELONG’s Floating Christmas Tree has arrived at Steampacket Quay ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday, November 30) Christmas in Geelong program launch.

The tree was towed across Corio Bay and into place during calm conditions on Tuesday morning.

At 25m tall, the tree features 800 lights, more than 15,000 pixels to create animations and 30 new digital windows.

The tree will be switched on tomorrow by one lucky child at the Christmas Opening Night – Denis Walter Carols by the Bay.

The special event will be guided by musical director Michael Cristiano, and include a preshow featuring children’s entertainers Team Dream.

The crowd will then hear from headline act Denis Walter, Oz Boyz, Lucy Riddett, Julie Walter and Santa.

Mr Walter said he couldn’t wait to start the festive season with a bang.

“This weekend we have two iconic Geelong events. My Carols by the Bay will be the lead into the lighting of the magnificent tree.

“It’s very exciting. It will draw people into using accommodation and restaurants and bring lots of pride to the city.

“We estimate there will be about 8,000 people. It’ll be a standing room only Christmas street party!”

City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Ali Wastie said the floating Christmas tree was a beacon of hope and symbol of unity.

“Our magical Floating Christmas Tree is the centrepiece of the city’s Christmas in Geelong festivities and this year; we’re excited to celebrate its 10th birthday.

“Its return to the bay marks the arrival of a special time in our region that attracts visitors from across Victoria.

“The floating tree encourages us to come together to celebrate the spirit of giving and goodwill.”

The Floating Christmas tree shows are six minutes long and will play each night every 15 minutes between 8.30pm and 12 midnight.

Tomorrow’s launch event will start at 6.30pm.
