Join the city’s new committee on sustainability

THE City of Greater Geelong has taken another step towards improving sustainability in the municipality, with expressions of interest now open for the City’s new Sustainability Advisory Committee.

The committee is a milestone in the delivery of the City’s Sustainability Framework and associated Action Plan 2020-22.

The Sustainability Framework was adopted by the council in July. It outlines 15 objectives across three key priority areas: protecting the environment, community wellbeing and social equity, and responsible and transparent business.

The action plan commits the council to several actions, either ongoing or to be done over the next three years, including:

Renew and implement the city’s Zero Carbon Emission Strategy to inform the Climate Change Response Plan and prepare a roadmap for the region to become zero-carbon by 2047

Reduce paper usage and storage of unused items through the Clever Together Project; a two-pronged approach including the physical removal of paper and junk items and the introduction
of technology

Plant more trees through the Urban Forest Strategy and create opportunities for community planting

Shape a healthy future for residents over 55 with the development and implementation of the Positive Ageing Strategy

Establish and implement a Public Transparency Policy to increase public confidence in council decision-making and planning, and

Establish an Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) that will prioritise projects that provide value for money, meet community needs and support a healthy natural environment.

Community members are being sought to join this committee to support implementation of the City’s sustainable environmental, social and
economic goals.

Individuals with expertise or experience in sustainability – such as financial analysis, risk management, emissions reduction, waste management, natural resource management,
public health and social planning – are invited to apply.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher encouraged those interested in the role to apply.

“If you have relevant experience and knowledge that you think would add value to our Sustainability Advisory Committee, I encourage you to submit an expression of interest,” Cr Asher said.

“We want this committee to be a collection of aspirational, open-minded experts who can provide guidance to council and help us to create a more sustainable future for our region.

“Our Sustainability Framework provides the governance and the Action Plan is now underway.

“Now we need input and community expertise to ensure we keep making positive progress.”
