City seeks guidance on access and inclusion
THE City of Greater Geelong is seeking residents who have a lived experience of disability to join its Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee to help promote equal access to goods, services and facilities.
Committee members will also play a key role in the implementation and review of council’s Access and Inclusion Plan, a commitment from the city to people with a disability.
Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy described the city as being characterised by people who look out for another, and it was important that residents consider how they can contribute to conversations on such issues.
“Everyone deserves equal access to goods, services and facilities in our community.
“This committee presents an opportunity to formally represent the interests of people in our neighbourhood who may be affected by disability.”
Councillor Anthony Aitken said those who end up on the committee will help make a real difference to the lives of others.
As chair of the Volunteering and Disability Portfolio, Cr Aitken said he believed it’s “vital that we see disability access and inclusion as a normal part of life,” and that this was achieved through greater community participation.
The role involves a two-year unpaid term starting in February 2023 and is open to people aged 18 and over who work or reside within the City of Greater Geelong.
