THE City of Greater Geelong has opened expressions of interest for a new operator to run theĀ Belmont Market.

The market is held each Sunday at the Barwon Valley Activity Centre and is one of the region’s largest community markets.

The city is seeking a new operator to ensure the market continues to run into the future.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the market remained an important part of the

local community.

“We’ve heard from stallholders and visitors that they love the Belmont Market on a Sunday for its vibrancy and community focus,”he said.

“A new operator will be able to preserve and strengthen what people already love about this market.”

Applicants will be required to outline how they would maintain the current operation of the market.

The successful operator will be granted the right to occupy the site and run the market independently of the city at the existing market times.

Cr Trent Sullivan, chair of the city’s economic development portfolio, said the opportunity was open to interested groups.

Community organisations, not-for-profit groups and experience operators have been invited

to apply.

“Operating this market presents a huge opportunity for the right organisation,” Cr Sullivan said.

“The EOI process is now open and closes on Monday 6 April, and anyone interested can head to our website to learn more.”

Residents can also provide feedback on the proposed licence arrangement with a new operator.
