City to continue bus shelter program
THE CITY of Greater Geelong is continuing its Bus Shelter Renewal Program in 2024, creating safer and more accessible public transport options across Greater Geelong.
The City has invested more than $500,000 in the program over the past two years, improving eight bus shelters located in Ocean Grove, Corio, Newtown, Lara, Belmont and Breakwater.
The upgrades included the installation of new concrete hardstands, footpath ramps, kerb and channel upgrades, tactile ground surface indicators and solar powered lighting.
City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said council’s annual Bus Shelter Renewal Program aimed to encourage more people to take bus trips.
“We want to improve the facilities across Geelong’s bus stops, to help make the public transport system more attractive and accessible to potential users.”
Transport portfolio chair, councillor Ron Nelson, said the upgrades help to create more accessible, environmentally friendly and efficient public transportation networks.
“The new lighting, directional aids and footpath ramps will ensure that all users will be safer when they are getting onto or off the bus at these stops.”
