CORIO Bay will ring in the New Year with not one, but two, dazzling fireworks displays on Sunday, December 31 as greater Geelong welcomes 2024.

The City of Greater Geelong will hold the first of two fireworks displays at 9.30pm this Sunday, catering to families with children keen for an early final night of 2023.

The traditional fireworks display will be conducted at midnight, safely discharged from a barge on the waters of Corio Bay. Each fireworks display will last about eight minutes.

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said community members would be able to view the fireworks and bring in the new year as long as they could see the skyline over Corio Bay.

“Council is thrilled to make the end of 2023 extra special for residents and visitors to our region by delivering fireworks each year.

“The fireworks can be enjoyed in so many ways – whether it’s having a picnic at Eastern Beach, going to dinner and drinks at a central Geelong hospitality venue or finding the perfect vantage spot.”

The city has urged residents to put a plan in place regarding the safety and security of pets during the New Year period.

It has also warned the community to refrain from letting off illegal fireworks, given the possibility of serious injury or death.

“With 2023 being a massive year for our region, Council is proud to put on a celebration that will bring joy to the community while also attracting patronage to central Geelong businesses who are known to do a roaring trade on New Year’s,” Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken said.

“Council wishes residents and visitors a wonderful end to 2023 and a happy and healthy 2024 ahead.

“We thank community members for each and every positive contribution they’ve made this year to ensure our region can be the best it can be.”

Eastern Beach Road will be closed between Moorabool Street and Yarra Street on December 31 from 8.00pm (Sunday) to 12.30am (Monday).
