COMPLETE road closures will occur at the intersection of Marshalltown Road and Bailey Street, Grovedale, this January for routine improvements.

Works will improve road safety and increase pedestrian security, and accentuate approach speeds.

Locals are being told to seek alternate travelling routes and expect delays from January 3 to January 25, 2024.

Key aspects of the project include the installation of wombat crossings, upgrades to the roundabout, drainage and kerb ramps, upgrades to streetlights and the provision of new footpaths.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said it was great the roadwork improvements could be funded under the federal government’s BlackSpot Safety Program.

“The Marshalltown Rd/Bailey St project is a testament to our commitment to making Grovedale a safer and more accessible community for everyone,” he said.

“We are prioritising the safety of our residents, construction staff, and all road users while enhancing the overall experience of our town.

“We acknowledge that there will be disruptions, the City sincerely appreciates the patience and understanding of our residents and road users as we carry out these essential roadworks.”

Federal member for Corangamite, Libby Coker, said the road upgrades were part of the government’s commitment to building safer roads.

“Located just nearby a primary school, childcare center and a busy shopping area, this federally funded upgrade of the Marshalltown Road and Bailey Street intersection will go a long way to improving safety for residents in the fast-growing area of Grovedale,” she said.

“I’d like to once again thank everyone in the Grovedale community who advocated for this much-needed upgrade, and also emphasise that the safety of construction workers and local residents must be a top priority as works get underway in January next year.”
