MORE than 200 guests attended the Geelong Nepalese Association’s annual Holi festival in Mount Duneed, which invited community members and representatives from all over the region to enjoy the colourful cultural event.

Funded through a state government grant, president of the Geelong Nepalese Association Niraj Karanjeet said he witnessed an unprecedented fusion of colours, traditions and dignitaries.

“I just want to extend a warm gratitude to all participants of the celebration in Geelong.

“I also want to thank the Traditional Owners of the land and unwavering support and enthusiastic participation of individuals from all walks of life in making this year’s event a resounding success.

“It was also amazing to see esteemed dignitaries there on the day too, including state member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman and City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan too, whose presence and support added prestige to the event, underscoring the importance of cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding in the community.”

Mr Karanjeet said residents from diverse backgrounds attended the celebration, joining hands to commemorate the spirit of Holi.

The festival of colours, also known as Holi, symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring and is celebrated across multiple countries each year including Nepal, India, and other South Asian countries.

“Amid laughter and merriment, attendees had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Nepali culture, experiencing firsthand the vibrant customs and rituals associated with this ancient festival,”

Mr Karanjeet said.

“In the spirit of Holi’s inclusive ethos, the celebrations welcomed individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their cultural or religious affiliations, fostering an environment of acceptance and mutual respect.

“The legacy of this year’s Holi celebrations in Geelong serves as a shining example of the power of cultural exchange to build bridges, foster understanding, and celebrate the rich diversity that enriches our communities.”
