Community care use touted for historic Newtown house

A disability support service is aiming to resume supported residential services at Newton's Chesterfield House.

A HERITAGE-LISTED Newtown property would be returned to use as housing for people requiring disability support, under a plan that is being considered by the City of Greater Geelong.

Support Provider Sasscare is applying to use Chesterfield House at 345 Shannon Avenue for supported residential services for up to 28 people and four staff at a time.

Since its establishment in 1909, Chesterfield House has been used for similar purposes such as nursing homes or disability services.

Planning documents indicate the site has been unoccupied for more than two years, with proponents seeking planning approval for its ongoing use and to retrospectively tick off minor building works such as external painting and repair of verandah floors.

The expansive Edwardian-style brick building consists of 28 bedrooms, 25 ensuite bathrooms, communal kitchen, dining and sitting areas and a courtyard, with a staff area and balcony upstairs.

Applicants say that the proposed use would provide an essential service in a convenient surburban location.

“The purpose of SRS is to provide vital medium- and long-term accommodation and support for clients requiring help with everyday activities in a safe and secure place without intensive support.

“The proposal will facilitate provision of vital community care accommodation in a purpose-built residence in close proximity to community services and amenities.”
