ARMSTRONG United has beaten Barwon Heads thanks to an 85th minute goal in the clubs’ annual Community Cup soccer match.

Now in its fifth year, the match spurs from the Barwon Heads Community Bank sponsoring and offering great support for both clubs.

Sponsors of the clubs were invited to the game to celebrate the support and embrace the enjoyment is has brought to the community.

In the Geelong Senior Men’s division two game, Caleb Watts was the hero for United on Friday last week at Barwon Heads Village Park.

The bank donates $500 to the winning team of the night for them to donate to a charity of choice. On Friday, United chose Our Village (formerly Geelong Mums)

Our Village provides resources to vulnerable babies and children to ensure their safety and assist healthcare workers.

Barwon Heads soccer club president Bec Dalton said the night was a success both on and off the field, despite their close loss.

“Friday’s game was a great match.

“It looked like it was going to be a draw until the last few minutes when Armstrong scored to win.

“We look forward to this match (continuing as) an annual fixture as both teams can celebrate the support of the Community Bank.”

The $500 donation made by the Barwon Heads Community Cup is just one of the many contributions the bank has made in the local area, having donated $1.3 million over the past 10 years.

Armstrong United sit seventh on the ladder after six rounds, while Barwon Heads are yet to win a game.
