Community to pause and reflect this Remembrance Day
AUSTRALIANS will pause and reflect not only on Remembrance Day itself but on the day before to remember the servicemen and servicewomen who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
Services will be held at RSL Sub-Branches, memorials and cenotaphs across the Geelong region.
On the Surf Coast, this will include three free community walks, which will finish in Torquay at Point Danger for the traditional Remembrance Day Service on November 11 at 11am.
Torquay RSL vice-president Darcy Dunstan said the walks were open to the whole community and there were distances to suit all fitness levels.
Buses will pick up all walkers at the Point Danger car park and drop them off at:
- 19km walk, 32 Inverlochy Street, Anglesea to Point Danger – Bus Pick up time 5am (bring a head torch for the walk)
- 6km walk: Bells Beach Car Park to Point Danger – Bus Pick up time 9.15am, and
- 2km walk: Jan Juc SLSC to Point Danger – Bus Pick up time 9.15am.
Participants are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] by November 9.
Seating at the Point Danger service begins at 10.45am for an 11am start, and the event will run for about 30 minutes.
In Anglesea, the Remembrance service take place on November 11.
The Anglesea RSL Sub-Branch is inviting the community to join them at the Anglesea & District War Memorial in Cameron Park at 10.30am.
The laying of wreaths is welcomed, and seating will be available for veterans, elderly and disabled.
On the Bellarine, the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL sub-branch will hold two Remembrance Day services on November 11 starting from 10.50am: one at the cenotaph at Ocean Grove Park and the other at Memorial Hall in Barwon Heads.The Portarlington & St Leonards RSL Sub-Branch will hold its Remembrance Day Service at the St Leonards Hall on November 11 from 11am.
In Geelong, the Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve Committee of Management will be hosting a Remembrance Sunday Service at Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve on November 10 at 10.45am.
It will feature the rededication of the National Servicemen’s Memorial monument, which will be relocated from the Geelong RSL Sub-Branch in Belmont.
The Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve Committee will be hosting its Remembrance Day service for the first time on the closest Sunday to November 11 a tradition that has been observed in the UK since World War II.
After the service, light refreshments will be served at the Waurn Ponds Hall.
A Remembrance Day service will be held at the Lara RSL Sub-Branch from 10.30am.
