THE City of Greater Geelong will move ahead with the sale of a former Meals on Wheels distribution centre, after determining the property is no longer suitable for community use.

The 655sqm site at 59 Bacchus March Road, Corio has been vacant since February 2022, when the Meals on Wheels service shifted to a centralised model.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the city was committed to ensuring public assets deliver “real value”.

“We’re carefully considered the future of this site and determined that it no longer meets the needs of our services or the community,” he said.

City officers have determined that the Bacchus March Road building’s classification and limited size offers little potential for other community uses.

It is also not considered feasible for upgrade or repurposing.

Cr Andrew Katos, chair of the council’s planning portfolio, said the sale would allow the city to reinvest in more suitable facilities.

“This site has served its purpose, and it’s time to look ahead to better ways of supporting our community.”

Community consultation on the sale ran between June and July, with only four submissions received.
