DACHSCHUND owners from across the region are invited to bring their long-bodied and short-legged dogs to the Geelong Waterfront in celebration of World Dachshund Day.
The international day was created on the longest and shortest day of the year, in celebration of the longest and shortest dog breed.
Held on June 22, the local event will include a walk about the waterfront, departing from the Geelong Boat House, heading towards Eastern Beach and retuning, with prizes and group photos also taking place.
World Dachshund Day facilitator Ruth Salminen said the event is all about bringing the popular dog breed together.
“When you bring any dog breed together, especially dachshunds, they love their own kind, it will be a fun day out for them.”
“It’s a fun day for the owners too, meeting likeminded people, it’s fun for people to just enjoy the dogs and dachshunds and knowing that it’s going to be celebrated all over the world.”
World Dachshund Day is now in its sixth year and has started to gain momentum around the world, with events continuing to get grow.
The Geelong event will also raise money for Dachshund IVDD Support Australia and the work they do in supporting the dachshund community.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a disc disease, common in dachshunds because of the stress on their backs, hind legs, and hips, with many of them ending up in a set of wheels.
Geelong’s dachshund celebration will start at 11am.
