Dangerous surf conditions forecast for Surf Coast and Bellarine this weekend

Beachgoers in the state’s west should exercise caution in the water over the weekend with large swells predicted to make conditions dangerous at ocean beaches, Life Saving Victoria and Surfing Victoria have warned.

The joint warning comes as the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts warm temperatures, large swells and a strong wind warning on Saturday with the weather warnings predicted to continue into Sunday for the Surf Coast and Bellarine peninsula.

Life Saving Victoria’s manager of lifesaving operations Liam Krige urged people to monitor the conditions over the weekend.

“Strong winds and large swells could lead to particularly unfavorable conditions for ocean beaches along the surf coast this weekend.

Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Adam Robertson said the large swells predicted were a particular cause of concern.

“With the strong wind and unusual swell direction set to hit the coast this weekend, it will make for extremely dangerous ocean conditions particularly on the Bellarine and Surf Coast.

“If heading to the beach ensure you assess the conditions, take extra caution if you are entering the ocean, surf to your ability and always surf with a mate.”

Mr Krige said it was important to consider the power of the ocean, and beachgoers should be prepared and find the safest beaches to swim.

“Remember to always swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches, be realistic about the limitations of your own skills and fitness and, if you are unsure of the conditions, speak with the lifesavers on patrolled beaches.”
