AS PART of the City of Greater Geelong’s Summer in the Laneways initiative, it has set up a designated 24/7 Pick Up and Drop Off zone for ridesharing services on Malop Street at the Dennys Place Breakthrough.

The four short-term parking spots in front of Frankie Bar & Eatery provide a nearby pick up and drop off point for the Little Malop Laneways Precinct, also known as Little Malop West End.

The Denny’s Place Breakthrough provides quick, safe and convenient pedestrian access between the short-term parking bays and Little Malop Laneways Precinct.

Although the short-term parking can be used by all, anyone seeking to use a rideshare service within this precinct will be directed to the new zone.

The Safe City Taxi Rank, located on the eastern side of Moorabool Street between Malop Street and Little Malop Street, is another option for a safe ride home.

Security will be based at this rank every Sunday morning from 12 midnight to 6am.

The city says it is continuing to work with Victoria Police to ensure safety in this precinct.

Everyone seeking to use a rideshare service within the Little Malop Laneways Precinct will be directed to this specific location.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the initiative was part of efforts to help the distinctive Little Malop West End reach its full potential.

“Given this special precinct is so popular, we’ve introduced this new 24/7 Pick Up and Drop Off zone to make it even easier to visit.

“The designated spot will improve safety and convenience for the community, while helping the flow of traffic on Malop Street.

“It’s time to embrace summer in our laneways and we thank community members for not driving after drinking.”

Acting Inspector Nick Uebergang from Geelong Local Area Command said Victoria Police was happy to work with the city to allow all emergency services to have greater access to Little Malop Street and other areas of the city to ensure community safety.

Summer in the Laneways also includes a trial period of expanding the outdoor dining area on Little Malop Street, which aims to supporting local businesses, creating a more vibrant culture, attracting more visitors and improving the street’s character.

All visitors to the precinct are invited to provide their feedback on the trial by heading to yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/SSLMSWODT
