Driving program renewed
LEARNER drivers without access to a supervisor or appropriate vehicle will benefit from the renewal of a local driving education program.
The City of Greater Geelong’s TAC L2P initiative has been extended through to June 30, 2024.
The volunteer-led program aims to assist young drivers aged 16 to 21 to gain the experience required for a probationary license.
The L2P initiative collectively provides participants with just under 500 hours of supervised driving practise each month.
More than 100 active volunteer supervising drivers have assisted 50 young people in Greater Geelong to obtain a probationary license in the last 12 months.
Mayor Trent Sullivan said the contract renewal was great news for young people across Geelong requiring assistance to obtain their licence.
“Young people need both a safe vehicle and an experienced mentor as they undertake the time-consuming challenge of gaining their driver’s licence.
“Drawing on the assistance of many partners, we are fortunate to have a great band of volunteers teaching good driving habits and road safety.”
The program is aided by support from the Community Bank Bellarine, who provide a car for the Bellarine area and the Lara District Community Bank who cover two vehicles based in North Geelong and Lara.
Community Bank Bellarine, manager of community engagement, Chris Niven, said his organisation was delighted to assist the region’s youth.
“We are proud that the car used in the amazing L2P Program was purchased and provided by the Community Bank,” Nr Niven said.
“This is the second car we’ve provided in our ongoing 10-year partnership, supporting local youth who need a vehicle and a volunteer mentor to help them obtain their drivers licence.”
