Facilities developments to support future sporting growth

June 14, 2023 BY

AN upgrade to modern and gender-neutral facilities at Shell Reserve will allow Corio Community Sports Club to continue to support future participation in football, netball and cricket within the community.

The upgrade, which included the demolition of previous changerooms, will will ensure the Purnell Road sporting precinct will continue to be a welcoming and inclusive place for all players.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan said the redevelopments were a significant step in supporting the Corio Community Sports Club as a place where everyone is valued and comfortable.

“Participation in physical activity and encouraging people to come together in sporting clubs benefits both mental and physical health.

“Women’s football and cricket, in particular, have grown enormously across Greater Geelong in recent years, and we need to have the facilities to accommodate the increasing numbers in these sports along with supporting the club’s existing netball program.”

Lara MP Ella George also welcomed the developments and congratulated the clubs involved.

“I’m so proud that the Victorian State Government provided funding towards the new female friendly facilities at Shell Reserve, which will open up more opportunities for women and girls to play the sports they love,” Ms George said.

“Local sporting clubs and their home grounds are an integral part of our community – and our community deserves the very best modern and inclusive facilities.

“Congratulations to the Corio Community Sports Club and Corio Cricket Club for all your hard work in securing this new facility for your community.”

The execution of the project is thanks to $3,081 million provided by the City of Greater Geelong Council and a $500,000 contribution from the Victorian Government through a Local Infrastructure Fund – Female Friendly Facilities stream.
