Feedback sought on Morena Street Reserve
THE City of Greater Geelong is asking residents for feedback on how to improve the Morena Street Reserve in Highton.
The site is five-hectares large, with a steep slope, limited accessibility and road frontage, as well as superb views.
The council is proposing retaining the existing wetlands and investing $2.2 million in works on the site over the next three years. These works will include a 2.5 metre wide concrete pedestrian path for accessibility, rock lined and grass channels to manage water flow, new trees, a small play space and seating.
A public consultation was held in 2022, with almost 120 residents taking part. Residents told the Council that accessible paths, nature play, canopy trees, picnic settings and park furniture at the reserve were important for the community.
Participants last year told the Council that they mostly used the space to walk, either alone or with their dogs, and they preferred that the natural habitat of the reserve is enhanced. They also requested that the drainage line and wetlands should be improved, including rock and grass lined channels.
Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan said: “the reserve is a much-loved space for Highton residents to visit.”
“This is an opportunity to maximise the potential of Morena Street Reserve’s stunning views across the Barwon River, central Geelong and Corio Bay and its natural environment.”
“Please tell us if the draft concept plan has captured the community’s sentiments to enhance the reserve’s natural elements while providing good pedestrian connections.”
Kardinia Ward Councillor Ron Nelson said: “the Morena Street Reserve is a unique, undeveloped and complex site with an informal trail, that was well-utilised by residents.”
“The community’s insights are a vital part to reaching the full potential of the site and the data collected from this consultation will be taken into account for the finalised concept plan.”
