VICTORIA Police teamed up with local community groups for the latest Safe Pl8 event in Waurn Ponds.

Members from the Community Engagement Unit and Waurn Ponds Police Station were joined by volunteers from South Barwon SES, Waurn Ponds and Grovedale Lions Club, and the new Neighbourhood Watch Armstrong Creek Team.

Taking place on June 21 at Bunnings Waurn Ponds, the team attended to 110 vehicles, all having their number plate screws changed over to one-way anti-theft screws, aiming to make number plates harder to steal or be used illegally.

Number plates are the number one item stolen from cars around the state, often used by criminals in other crimes to avoid identification.

By replacing standard screws with the one-way screws, the number plates become harder to steal, with the measure being a safe and effective way to deter thieves and keep motorists’ registration safe.

Anti-theft screws can also be purchased from hardware stores, automotive parts stores and petrol stations.
