A GRASSROOTS movement tackling loneliness through sunrise mindfulness and community connection will launch weekly wellness sessions at Barwon Edge next month.

The initiative is the brainchild of Point Lonsdale’s Natalie Woodfull, who founded CONNECT to create safe, welcoming spaces where people can move, reflect and build genuine community ties.

Launched in Ocean Grove three years ago as part of Woodfull’s own journey towards wellness, CONNECT now draws up to 100 people to its twice-weekly sunrise beach sessions and has expanded into larger “ICONIC” events at wineries and other scenic locations.

CONNECT’s growth into Geelong, Woodfull said, is about deepening its impact.

“We create such a safe space that people can just be authentically them,” she said.

“I’ve had people turn up in pyjamas; it doesn’t need to be all the whiz-bang activewear, just turn up in something that’s comfortable.

“Grab a yoga mat, grab a blanket, with an open heart and an open mind and I can guarantee you will have a beautiful morning.”

The first Geelong session will be held on Saturday, October 4, between 7am and 8am, with weekly events to follow.

“We’re surrounded by natural gum trees, we’re on beautiful lawn, and we’ve got this Barwon River flowing beside us,” Woodfull said.

The first 15 minutes of each session is focused on “curated connection and conversation”, with participants invited to share a story with someone they don’t know. A movement activity, such as yoga or Pilates, follows.

“We continue that on with a coffee at Barwon Edge,” Woodfull said.

“We just tuck the yoga mat under the arm and walk into the café and we get conversation and coffees and just continue the morning.

“And that’s completely optional. People don’t have to hang around for the connection over a cup of coffee, but that’s really where those beautiful friendships and conversations occur.”

CONNECT will also expand to the Surf Coast in April, with Torquay’s Cosy Corner the next location to host weekly sessions.
