Funding boost for regional cinemas to combat pandemic

A GEELONG cinema is among four regional Victorian venues that will share in $240,000 of funding as part of the federal government’s $20 million Supporting Cinemas’ Retention Endurance and Enhancement of Neighbourhoods (SCREEN) Fund.

The Pivotonian Cinema, based in South Geelong, received a $35,000 one-off continuity grant after proving that it had suffered considerable financial loss since the pandemic began.

Receiving up to $85,000 each, the funds administered by Screen Australia will help assist independent cinemas that have experienced significant declines in revenue due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Senator for Victoria, Sarah Henderson, was pleased to announce the allocation of funds to regional cinemas such as the Pivotonian, as well as Bendigo Cinema, Ballarat Cinema and Star Cinema in Eaglehawk.

“This funding will enable our independent cinemas to keep operating during this period of severe disruption, which is so important to the fabric of our community,” Ms Henderson said.

“Independent cinemas play a vital role in the cultural and artistic vibrancy of regional communities.”

Across the country more than $8.7 million in grants have already been allocated to 158 cinemas.

This will provide a popular, low-cost and COVIDSafe way for people to go out and enjoy a movie as part of a community – particularly in regional areas, according to Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, Paul Fletcher.

“Independent cinemas are so important to the social and cultural health of our communities in Australia, which is why we acted quickly to introduce our $20 million SCREEN Fund,” Mr Fletcher said.

Applications to receive grants from the SCREEN Fund are open until December 24 or until the total funds have been committed.
