THE search for the region’s next official “youth voice” has begun, as nominations open for the 2026 youth council.
The City of Greater Geelong’s is seeking candidates for next year’s youth council, which ensures the perspectives of young people are heard in the decisions that shape the community.
Successful candidates will gain firsthand experience in civic and democratic processes, develop leadership skills and contribute ideas on the issues that directly impact young people.
Geelong’s youth council is made up of 11 young people, with a junior mayor and deputy mayor selected by the successful candidates to represent the group.
Meeting monthly, the youth council is supported by the city’s youth development team and provides advice to the council on issues such as health and wellbeing, cost of living, climate change and safety.
They’re also involved in training and development, invited to council events and participate in mentoring sessions with councillors.
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the youth council offered young people aged between 12 and 17 the chance to make a real difference in 2026.
“Our youth council program empowers young people, helps build their skillset and confidence, and enables council and the community to hear directly from our younger residents,” he said.
“We want to hear about the issues important to them, the challenges they’re facing and what needs to improve in the region for people growing up here.
“We need a diverse youth council that’s representative of the Greater Geelong community, so we encourage everyone to consider nominating, regardless of previous leadership experience.”
Junior mayor Ayush Singh joined Cr Kontelj in encouraging young people to nominate themselves for this “exciting and rewarding experience”.
“The youth council program is an incredible opportunity for young people to develop their skills while also giving back to their community.
“You’ll build confidence, make new friends and be part of something that makes a difference.”
Nominations close on October 3, with successful nominees to be notified in December.
