AUSTRALIA paused this week to remember those who served in wars and armed conflicts as the nation commemorated Remembrance Day.

The Geelong RSL Sub-branch hosted its annual service at the peace memorial on Tuesday.
Rain and hail didn’t keep residents, local council and political representatives from attending the service and showing their support.

Geelong RSL senior vice-president Mathew Jack led the proceedings, saying it was a time to acknowledge and reflect.
“Today is a time to remember all those that came home or suffered as a result of their service,” he said.

Throughout the service, attendees also heard from guest speaker, retired Air Commodore and City of Greater Geelong councillor Rowan Story.
Service attendees were invited to participate in the wreath-laying before the Piper’s Lament and The Ode.

Bugler Christine Bowden played the Last Post and the Rouse.
Services were also held at the Geelong West Town Hall, Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve, Lara RSL Sub-branch and Norlane RSL.

Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, honours all Australians who lost their lives in all wars and conflicts.
As part of honouring the sacrifice made during war, a minute’s silence is observed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, marking the end of fighting in World War I.
