Geelong spotlights local Talent with ‘Live and Local’ program
GEELONG City Council is elevating the local music scene with the debut of the ‘Live and Local’ program, a collaboration with APRA AMCOS and the Live Music Office.
Live and Local operates as a capacity-building initiative across various councils nationally, aiming to fortify grassroots live music communities.
Through matched-funded partnership opportunities, APRA AMCOS and the Live Music Office assist local councils in maintaining a consistent approach to sustainable live music.
A key component of ‘Live and Local’ is the introduction of a Music Industry Register. Musicians, whether newcomers or seasoned professionals, are invited to enlist.
The register aims to be a central point for details on live shows, professional growth seminars, networking events, collaborative opportunities and grants.
Further, local businesses and music venues can join the Live Music Venue register, catering to those keen to spotlight musical events in the region.
Mayor Trent Sullivan said Geelong boasts a profound musical heritage.
“Geelong has a rich musical history and our own distinct scene that is separate from Melbourne,” he said.
“Chrissy Amphlett from the Divinyls and Magic Dirt’s Adalita are Geelong legends, Goanna formed and created some of their iconic songs here and even members of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard did their schooling in Geelong.”
“With such an eclectic blend of musicians continuing to come out of our region, our Music Industry Register will become a go-to resource that will support and strengthen the industry.”
It is estimated that live music contributes about $150 million annually to the local economy.
Creativity and Culture portfolio chair, Councillor Melissa Cadwell said live music is integral to the region.
“A thriving live music scene makes a powerful and positive contribution to the community and our economy.”
“Council is committed to cementing the region’s reputation as a live music hub by supporting the many talented local musicians and attracting Australian and international acts to our shores.”
From 2017 to 2022, the City allocated over $274,000 to the music sector via the Community Grants scheme.
