Geelong to give the gift of independence
GEELONG locals are being called upon to get behind the Petbarn Foundation’s 12th annual Seeing Eye Dogs Appeal.
The national initiative aims to raise vital funds to train Seeing Eye Dogs for Aussies who are blind or have low vision.
A Seeing Eye Dog is more than a companion – they are a truster partner who provided independence, safety and confidence.
With an estimated 450,000 Australians who are blind or have low vision and approximately 12,500 additional people experiencing vision loss each year, the demand for Seeing Eye Dogs is growing rapidly.
Experts project these numbers will surge by 25 per cent by 2030, making the need for more Seeing Eye Dogs more critical than ever.
Petbarn Geelong area manager Steve Gray said the appeal is a deeply personal one for many team members and customers.
“Every year, we’re moved by the generosity of our Victorian community.”
“It’s incredible to see so many people rally behind this cause. Together we’re not just raising money – we’re helping give someone the freedom to navigate life with confidence and independence.”
This year, the goal is to raise over $1.1 million nationally – enough to train 22 Seeing Eye Dogs and create 22 life-changing partnerships.
It costs over $50,000 and takes up to two years to train one Seeing Eye Dog.
Training begins from eight weeks of age, when puppies learn basic socialisation skills from volunteer carers supported by puppy development trainers.
At approximately 12 months of age, they progress to up to five months of expert one-on-one training with a specialised instructor, where they develop the skills needed for their important job.
With the Geelong community’s support, a pup in training today could become someone’s guiding light tomorrow.
“Whether it’s spare change at the register or an online donation, every little bit helps,” Mr Gray added.
“It all adds up to something much bigger – a brighter, more independent future for someone who truly needs it.”
Geelong locals can get involved by making a tax-deductible donation at their local Petbarn store throughout July or by donating online at petbarn.com.au/seeingeyedogs
