Golfers prepare for Longest Day to support great cause

Barwon Valley Golf Club (BVGC) member Simon Trickey came to the club a couple of months ago eager to partake in the Longest Day, and the response has been fantastic.

The Longest Day is a fundraiser event that takes place on December 14 to raise money for the Cancer Council. Players have a number of options to get involved, but the ultimate challenge of the Longest Day sees golfers tee-off at dawn and play a full four rounds – 72 holes – throughout the day.

BVGC had one member take part in 2019, but eight members are getting involved this year with a total of 18 (10 guests) treading the course for a great cause.

Trickey lost his father to cancer five years ago. He said this was something he had been wanting to do for a number of years and was excited to be joined by a few of his mates on the journey.

“There’s a few people having a go, which is great; hopefully we can get a bigger team next year.

“You don’t really know how to prepare for it, it’s a bit of a unique day.

“We’ll be a bit sore by the end of the day, but it’s for a good cause.”

BVGC general manager Steve Powers is backing the event. The club will keep its doors open deep into the day to make it possible for the players, who will no doubt hit the 19th hole, or the 73rd, for a well-earned drink.

“The club’s happy to support the cause and raise money for cancer,” he said.

“It’s good for the club to support great charities and we’re happy to support the members to play the four rounds on the day.”

The Longest Day is a nation-wide event and has raised $1.8 million since it began.
