THE Gordon Tafe has unveiled its new dedicated Aboriginal education centre.

Kitjarra wurrun-ngeen Centre translates to “our learning centre” in Wadawurrung language, and will provide the TAFE’s 220 students with a culturally safe space for study and to access tertiary education services.

The new facility will also support about 30 local high school-aged students into Aboriginal cultural courses and employment pathways, which focus on establishing a connection to culture and identity while improving learning and social outcomes.

Gordon TAFE chief Joe Ormeno said the centre would help local Indigenous students to maximise their potential.

“We have a great track record helping Aboriginal Victorians into training, and this exciting new centre will help even more people learn and connect with their culture and lay the foundation for their future,” he said.

State Government MPs said the new facility was an important development in its multi-million-dollar investment into the institute.

“It’s really great to see The Gordon’s upgrade progress, including the fantastic new Kitjarra wurrun-ngeen Centre, which will give local Aboriginal Victorians a gateway to skills and training,” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said.

The Gordon’s $23.5 milion upgrade is due to finish mid-next year.
