HUNDREDS of people were left disappointed last weekend when the Kids+ Kite Festival was cancelled due to extreme weather.

“Dangerous winds” forced the event’s cancellation just hours before it was due to start on Sunday, with organisers citing public safety as their top priority.

Kids+ marketing manager Sharon Gibbons said she was heartbroken the organisation had to cancel the fifth edition of the much-loved event.

“The strong gusts persisted all day, which meant that launching hundreds of kites with children present could have led to serious injury.

“Our event partners, including the City of Greater Geelong, have been incredibly supportive.

“While it was a difficult decision to make on the day, we are confident it was the right one. We hope to return next year with Mother Nature on our side.”
