THE Lara RSL is gearing up for the second instalment of its Kokoda Memorial Challenge, last week launching an ambitious $100,000 fundraising target it hopes will create meaningful change for veterans transitioning out of service.
About 250 people are expected to take part in the 96km trek, which replicates the length of the Kokoda Track, over two days in October, weaving their way through the You Yangs and across the Lara township.
RSL Victoria has committed to using the funds raised to develop a community intervention pilot program that will help veterans bridge the gap between service and civilian life, and just two weeks in, the fundraiser is already nearing a third of its goal.
“It takes a community to look after veterans,” Lara RSL president Marcus McEwen said.
“I know from my own experience, and certainly from talking with so many veterans, we all go through the same thing. You spend whatever part of your life in the service, you develop a new family, develop a new friend network – that is your life.
“You work together, you play together; it is everything. But when you leave that, hand your ID card back, nine times out of 10, you lose contact … There’s so many things that you lose when you walk out that door and it’s like ‘How do I start this again?'”
McEwen said the goal of the pilot will be to make contact with ex-service personnel early and connect them with the supports they need to set them up for a smooth transition. If it is successful, he’s hoping to see the program rolled out across the country.
“For those that do get out that are struggling mentally or physically, it’s about giving them that early help before those things get worse,” he said.
To ensure its success, he’s encouraging communities both near and far to get behind the initiative, either by donating what they can to the fundraiser or participating in the walk – just make sure to “get some kilometres in your legs” first.
