RENDERS of the new pavilion set for construction at Geelong’s Landy Field have been revealed, as local sporting organisations celebrate the boost the facilities will give grassroots sport across the region.

The renders, released recently by Regional Development Victoria, show the design proposed for the new $10 million grandstand and pavilion, which will feature change rooms, a kiosk, uniform store and social and meeting spaces.

The City of Greater Geelong will contribute $5 million to the project, while the Victorian government will provide the remaining $5 million through its council support package, provided to regional cities that were to host the now-cancelled 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Geelong Athletics president Matthew Webster said the new pavilion will benefit both athletes and the regional athletics scene and offer greater opportunities for clubs to collaborate.

“These facility upgrades offer the chance for Geelong to become recognised as the premier regional athletics centre in Australia, and a must visit destination.”

Barwon Sports Academy will be brought on-site as part of the upgrades to Landy Field, a move Webster said would “assist with high-performance training” and help to “create new development pathways”.

Barwon Sports Academy chief executive officer Cameron Loftus said the redevelopment was going to be a game-changer for athletics in the region.

“We have so many wonderful coaches and volunteers. The only limit on supporting our grassroots talent is appropriate resources and a great venue.

“This will allow us to support our athletes in new ways. Whether that’s through small group education sessions, or specialist strength and conditioning classes.

“What’s exciting is we will have access to a space we can fit out for our purposes.”

Geelong Little Athletics secretary Ramona Browne said the new pavilion will help make Landy Field more accessible to the wider community.

“More schools will hold their athletic events here, while local AFL and AFLW clubs could hold more training at Landy.

“Private hire could also take place for events, special workshops, training days, clinics and sports-related medical services.”

The pavilion is expected to be completed in 2026.
