WATER Minister Lisa Neville visited Geelong this week to open a suite of recently completed Barwon River access facilities.

Ms Neville visited South Geelong for the Wal Whiteside Multi-Use Platform and a landing extension at South Geelong’s rowing precinct, and Newtown to view the new Yollinko Wetland Walk and Multi-Use Platform and Marnock Vale launching facilities on Tuesday.

The works, all finished in the past 18 months, were worth $726,000 with joint investment from the state government ($570,000), Corangamite Catchment Management Authority ($30,000), the Victorian Fisheries Authority ($50,000) and City of Greater Geelong ($76,000).

New platforms aim to provide better access to recreational activities including rowing, fishing and boating at strategic locations along the river.

“The Barwon River is a much-loved piece of the Geelong community and the new access ramps will encourage more people to get out enjoy our beautiful waterways,” Ms Neville said.

“These upgrades will complement our Barwon River Action Plan, which will ensure this iconic waterway stays healthy for future generations to enjoy.”
