BOTH major parties have made a play for the sporting vote in Corangamite ahead of the federal election, each announcing close to a million dollars towards better netball courts in Grovedale if they form government.
The election commitments, revealed within hours of each other on Thursday last week, would go towards the cost of upgrading the courts used by Grovedale Football and Netball Club at Burdoo Reserve.
Formed in 1947, Grovedale Football Netball Club has more than 1,000 players across football and netball, ranging from juniors to seniors.
In September 2024, the Burdoo Reserve netball courts were deemed non-compliant because of an increased risk profile due to higher levels of congestion on the team-bench sideline.
AFL Barwon later announced Grovedale would play all its netball games indoors at the neighbouring Grovedale Secondary College stadium in 2025.
Liberal candidate for Corangamite Darcy Dunstan announced his party’s $898,000 election pledge on Thursday afternoon, with Corangamite Labor federal member Libby Coker matching and exceeding it four hours later.
Mr Dunstan said his party’s funding would deliver safe, compliant netball courts so that Grovedale’s young girls and women could return to their home courts.
“With more than 400 netball players, the club plays a vital role in keeping kids and adults active and engaged in sport.
“But without safe and compliant courts, our local netballers have been left without a home. This funding will fix that and secure the future of netball in Grovedale.
“When we invest in local sport, we’re investing in stronger communities, healthier families and better outcomes for everyone — from kids playing their first game to senior players and volunteers who give so much to their club.”
Ms Coker said Labor’s investment was essential for supporting local sport and empowering women and young people to stay active.
“This funding is about ensuring our community has the facilities it deserves.
“With safe, modern courts, the Grovedale Football Netball Club will be able to continue providing opportunities for participation, while strengthening our local sporting culture.”
“These upgrades are not only vital for today’s players, but for the future of netball in Grovedale and the region.”
