Lions stalwart announced as Local Heroes finalist

A GEELONG children’s camp coordinator has been lauded for his tireless work in the community with 2023 Westfield Geelong Local Heroes finalist status.

Lions Club of Geelong Corio Bay member Brian Stewart Edward APMOAM is one of three local finalists for the prestigious $20,000 grants prize, which each year shine a spotlight on every day role models who make a positive impact on their local community or the environment.

Mr Edward is a former police chief superintendent and since his retirement in 2002, has devoted his life to helping children within the Greater Geelong region.

The 83-year-old has helped to fundraise over $400,000 to allow 1,300 people to attend five-day Lions sponsored summer camps held at the Licola Wilderness Village.

The camps are for children from 8 to 11 years old and include a series of fun activities to challenge them to exceed their expectations, create a spirit of teamwork and cooperation and rise to their full potential.

The kids are recommended to attend the camps by community support programs like Cultura, the Smith Family or their local schools.

If lucky enough to win, Mr Edward will use the $20,000 grant to cover camp fees for another 40 children.

 

“I’m incredibly privileged and humbled to represent the interests of deserving children in Geelong in this way.

“I’ve been involved with the Lions Club for 47 years and have been doing the camps on a semi full time basis since retiring from the police force in 2002.

“My background and knowledge of the influence of senior figures has helped me to develop the minds and assist these young people.

“Just in the short space of five days you notice the changes in behaviour and attitudes of some young people who are in the company of like-minded children and volunteer mentors.

“It’s very rewarding work.”

Other local finalists include Jade Hamilton (general manager at Lazarus Community Centre) and Libby Bate (president at Cancer After Care Group Geelong).

The successful hero for each centre will be awarded a $20,000 grant for the group or organisation they represent, and each finalist will receive a $5,000 grant for their group or organisation.

Since the program was established in 2018, the Westfield Local Heroes program has made a significant difference to more than 600 community organisations, investing a total of $6.135 million in community grants, with a further $1.26 million to be awarded this year.
