A MARKET akin to the famous weekly event in Hobart is on the cards for central Geelong, with the City of Greater Geelong asking potential operators to express their interest in establishing, programming and managing it.

The city funded the project in this year’s budget and has now released a Request for Proposal for the initiative, which aims to promote unique, locally made and high calibre offerings, reflecting creativity, sustainability and the city’s status as a UNESCO City of Design and the vision for central Geelong to be a vibrant hub for people and exchange.

The market is expected to feature a curated mix of high quality stallholders offering locally produced gourmet packaged foods, artisan beverages, packaged takeaway food suitable for off-site consumption, and handcrafted goods. There will be seasonal and themed elements to enhance the market’s appeal as a distinctive destination.

It is anticipated the new market will start during spring.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the new market would tick many boxes.

“I have spoken considerably about the need for a Salamanca-style market in central Geelong, and I’m pleased that we’re moving towards getting it up and running by spring.

“This market will work towards transforming Little Malop Central to be a vibrant and welcoming public space that will bring people back to central Geelong.

“This will be a big win for local designers, makers, artists, local musicians, and creative entrepreneurs, but it also supports the community during a cost-of-living crisis – people will be able purchase products directly from local suppliers.”

He encouraged anyone interested in operating the market to submit a proposal.

“I look forward to hearing the announcement of the successful applicant and seeing everyone working together for an improved central Geelong,” he said.

Potential operators should head to geelong.link/tenders and submit a proposal by 2pm on July 25.
