Little Malop Street to be vehicle free

THE City of Greater Geelong is making Little Malop Street more pedestrian-friendly and has increased outdoor dining by implementing a 12-month trial of automatic rising bollards in the hospitality precinct.

The automatic rising bollards, which are now in operation between Dennys Place and Moorabool Street, prevent vehicles from entering the precinct daily from 10am-4am the following morning.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said through the trial the City hopes to make the dining and entertainment precinct a safer, more enjoyable place for the community.

“Geelong’s becoming known for its vibrant laneway culture and we want to continue to build on that by testing out a pedestrian safe zone that also increases the available space for events and activations,” Mayor Sullivan said.

“As the region experiences a renaissance following COVID disruptions, we are committed to encouraging and attracting more economic activity to the area.”

The City has consulted with community members affected by the trial, with arrangements to suit the local community including delivery and parking zones.

The trial allows controlled vehicle access via a keypad access code giving emergency services and residents of the precinct allowed 24-hour access to the street, with vehicle use restricted for businesses except in the case of an emergency.

Real-time data from the trial will quickly indicate if the changes have improved walkability.
