A GEELONG local is lacing up her runners and getting moving this month to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing through the Lifeline 10,000 Step Challenge.

This March, 19-year-old Natalie Grisenti is hoping to shine a light on the lifesaving work of Lifeline Australia, an organisation that holds a special place in her heart.

Over the course of the month, Lifeline are encouraging locals to join thousands of Aussies who are stepping up to save lives, with every step and every dollar raised assisting Lifeline in providing 24/7 support to Aussies in need.

Using her mental health battles as strength and motivation, Mrs Grisenti hopes that moving and raising awareness can show others that it’s not weak to speak.

“I’ve been dealing with mental health issues for a few years and in years gone by have done other Lifeline challenges,” Grisenti said.

“Last year I did the push up challenge and this year I’m hoping to move 10,000 steps.

Grisenti said she is using her own struggles as motivation.

“I’ve always wanted to give back to help Lifeline do what they do for so many people… just a few dollars can help save a life.

“Since the pandemic, mental health has been spoken about a lot more which is great, however it is sad that it took until then.

“For me, the challenge is just about raising awareness around the stigma of mental health and wellbeing.”

The 19-year-old has been walking between 7,000 and 10,000 steps a day.

As she gets towards the end of the month, Mrs Grisenti has said the motivation wavers to continue moving the 10,000 steps, but her end goal of $500 is keeping her spirited.

“The challenge is a difficult experience for me… as someone who has some good days, and lots of bad days, the motivation to get the step count each day can be really hard,” Grisenti said.

“I think sometimes people forget how hard simple tasks can be for people suffering with mental health issues.

While also trying to raise funds for a good cause, I’m also raising awareness of what life with a mental illness looks like, and how it can be challenging every day.”
