THE Surf Coast and Geelong community have helped to push for better mental health by raising $12,000 for Lifeline Geelong and South West Victoria during Lifeline’s national Push Up Challenge.

From June 1 to 23, participants were tasked with completing 3,144 push-ups across a 23-day period to put a spotlight on the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2021.

The challenge aimed to raise awareness around mental health and wellbeing and get the community active in a fun and inclusive manner.

Lifeline Victoria general manager Jason Doherty said the $12,000 proceeds would go a long way in helping Lifeline Geelong answer the 56 calls daily from people in crisis.

“It has been moving to see the community embrace this year’s challenge.

Locally, we saw businesses, community groups and individuals get involved and raise over $12,000 for Lifeline Geelong”.

“The challenge has been a great way to put a spotlight on mental health issues affecting everyday people.

“Tragically, suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44. Lifeline is there 24/7 to be a voice of calm in crisis.”

Mr Doherty and the Lifeline team also acknowledged the top five fundraising teams from within the region, Pushing Stronger Together, BNI Business Edge, Access Your Supports, Evologic, and BNI Network Connections.
